Friends-of-felines

who we are

Friends of Felines – Cape Hatteras Island Sponsors

Organized efforts of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) began in Denmark and England over 35 years ago.  TNR was formerly introduced to the United States in 1980, and in 1990 Alley Cat Allies created a nationwide network.  Since then there has been a progressive movement for the protection of feral, community cats and their offspring.  In communities where TNR is practiced, feral and community cat numbers have dropped.

Though TNR is still controversial among some groups, the vast majority of animal welfare agencies recognize its successes and endorse TNR as an effective way to address the free-roaming cat overpopulation crisis.  The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the United States, among others all praise TNR groups for their achievements, and support the practice of TNR.

TNR groups around the country have seen their shelter intake rates and euthanasia rates drop as a result of their work.

Friends of Felines-Cape Hatteras Island’s TNR Program would not be possible without the support of our many ‘friends’ and sponsors.  Friends of Felines administers its Trap, Neuter, Return program by utilizing the services of local veterinarians on the Outer Banks that are available to us at a reduced cost.

The National Humane Education Society’s financial donation enabled FOFHI to implement a microchip program for all TNR cats on Hatteras Island.  The Society also donated food and litter to support our caregivers after the island was devastated by Hurricane Irene in the fall of 2011.  They also fund feeding stations and shelters for the island cats.
