Friends of Felines - Cape Hatteras Island Services

Friends of Felines Cape Hatteras Island offers the following services to help with the humane management of cats on Hatteras Island:

Technical and financial support with capturing, spaying or neutering, vaccinating and microchipping free-roaming cats within the seven villages on Hatteras Island.  Contact us for further information.

Lending of humane traps on Hatteras Island.

Traps can only be used for the purposes of trap, neuter, return of free-roaming cats.  Contact us for further information.

We do not offer the following services, but will be happy to refer you for assistance.

Relocation of free-roaming cats.  We do not relocate free-roaming cats as it detracts from our mission of humanely reducing the local free-roaming cat population.  Relocation is extremely stressful for the animals and generally does not work.

Sheltering.  We do not offer sheltering services.  The animal shelter for Hatteras Island is located in Manteo.

Spay At Four Months

A fertile cat can have over 24 kittens a year!  Even though there is a general awareness about the crucial role that spay/neuter plays in pet population control the fact remains that over 53% of cat litters born in the U.S. occur because people do not realize their kitten can get pregnant at an early age.

New anesthetics and surgical procedures has made spaying prior to six months safe.  Younger cats recover faster and have fewer surgical and post-surgical complications than their older counterparts.  There is very little body fat to contend with, the incision is smaller, surgery time is reduced and recovery time is very short.

Cats can get pregnant as early as four months.  You can help to prevent an 'Oops' litter by having your kitten spayed at four months.
